Party Like it’s 2017

03 Jan Party Like it’s 2017

“Interesting” year, 2016. Not my favorite and I’m not the only one saying so (Good Riddance 2016!). However, if thinking back on this calendar year gives me pause, what awaits us in 2017? Sure, I fully understand that January 1st is just the day after December 31st, yet there is something symbolic and poignant about the shift into a new year. Just like birthdays, New Year’s Eve marks the passage of time.

As a heavy-duty Prince fan and child of the 80’s I would “Dance my life away” on New Year’s Eve essentially from 1982 on! Now, as a parent of young children (we’ve had some *interesting* discussions thanks to Prince), I feel compelled to think about the message of his anthemic “1999.”

Clearly, Prince didn’t have it all figured out or he would be with us today.  Having left us at age 57, his passing reminds us how fragile life is and that, even when we have strong religious faith as he did, we may lose our way. Talent and musical genius carry you so far. It would seem that being a prodigy and a superstar is often a lonely affair. For all the joy and catharsis he brought his faithful followers, I can’t help thinking Prince Rogers Nelson deserved better.

He did, however, leave behind a brilliant musical legacy. Rolling Stone ranked “1999” as number 215 on their list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. It’s a bit higher up on my list, but I think that’s pretty fair.  In “1999,” Prince reminds us that life is short, and we had best not put off for tomorrow what can be done today.

“Life is just a party and parties weren’t meant to last.”

Now that the holidays are mostly behind us, don’t let the party stop! Find joy. Laugh. Hug your kids. Laugh some more.

1999, by Prince

(I was dreamin’ when I wrote this
Forgive me if it goes astray)
But when I woke up this morning
I could have sworn it was judgment day

(The sky was all purple
There were people runnin’ everywhere)
Tryin’ to run from the destruction
And you know I didn’t even care

‘Cuz they say…
2000 zero zero party over oops out of time
So tonight I’m gonna party like it’s 1999

I was dreamin’ when I wrote this
So sue me if I go too fast
But life is just a party
And parties weren’t meant to last

War is all around us
My mind says prepare to fight
So if I gotta die
I’m gonna listen to my body tonight

‘Cuz they say…
2000 zero zero party over oops out of time
So tonight I’m gonna party like it’s 1999

(Lemme tell ya somethin’…)
If you didn’t come to party
Don’t bother knockin’ on my door
I got a lion in my pocket
And baby he’s ready to roar

Everybody’s got a bomb
We could all die any day
But before I’ll let that happen
I’ll dance my life away

‘Cuz they say…
2000 zero zero party over oops out of time
We’re runnin’ outta time
So tonight we gonna, we gonna…
(Tonight I’m gonna party like it’s 1999)

(Say it 1 more time)
2000 zero zero party over oops out of time
No, no
So tonight we gonna, we gonna…
(Tonight I’m gonna party like it’s 1999)

Alright, it’s 1999
You say it, 1999
1999
1999 don’t stop, don’t stop, say it one more time

2000 zero zero party over oops out of time
Yeah, Yeah
So tonight we gonna, we gonna
(Tonight I’m gonna party like it’s 1999)

Mommy, why does everybody have a bomb?
Mommy, why does everybody have a bomb?

Love, light, laughter and PARTY in 2017!

This one I can play for my kids! Prince on Sesame Street.
